Giants minor league second baseman Ryan Jones has been suspended 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance, according to Joey Nowak of MLB.com.
Jones tested positive for Amphetamine, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Jones' suspension will take effect at the beginning of the 2014 season.
The 23-year-old was a 13th-round draft pick out of Michigan State in 2012. After a rough pro debut that year, he bounced back with a solid 2013 at Salem-Keizer, where he hit .336/.429/.420 with 12 doubles and nine stolen bases in 173 plate appearances.
Jones was a candidate to play for the GreenJackets this season after succeeding in his second trip to short-season ball. He is currently on the GreenJackets roster, which is more of a technicality at this point in the year. But it seemed like a good possibility he would be in Augusta.
Now, Jones will sit 50 games without pay and could return to Arizona after his suspension. The earliest Jones could suit up for the GreenJackets would be May 26 at home against Savannah, but a trip to extended spring training first seems possible.
