Braves announce NLDS roster

The Braves announced their NLDS roster on Wednesday afternoon. Game 1 against the Dodgers is set for 8:37 p.m., on Thursday.

PITCHERS (11): Luis Avilan (LH), Luis Ayala (RH), David Carpenter (RH), Freddy Garcia (RH), David Hale (RH), Craig Kimbrel (RH), Kris Medlen (RH), Mike Minor (LH), Julio Teheran (RH), Jordan Walden (RH) and Alex Wood (LH)

CATCHERS (3): Evan Gattis, Gerald Laird and Brian McCann

INFIELDERS (5): Freddie Freeman, Paul Janish, Chris Johnson, Elliot Johnson and Andrelton Simmons

OUTFIELDERS (6): Jose Constanza, Jason Heyward, Reed Johnson, Jordan Schafer, B.J. Upton and Justin Upton

The most notable player left off the Braves roster is second baseman Dan Uggla, who finished with a .179/.309/.362 slash and 22 home runs. The Braves chose to go with the defense of Janish over Uggla's bat-first profile.

The other notable name left off is left-handed reliever Scott Downs, who struggled against left-handed batters down the stretch. He finished with a 2.49 ERA and 19.6 percent strikeout rate in 43.1 innings.

Atlanta will go with Alex Wood and Luis Avilan as the left-handed specialists in the bullpen. Wood will likely come first in a higher-leverage situation.

Reliever Jordan Walden was nearly a game-time decision of sorts, as the Braves kept their eyes on him as to how he would respond after returning from an extended lay-off. He struggled over his final few innings, totaling seven runs allowed in his last 2.1 innings spanning three outings.

Rookie David Hale has made the roster after gaining confidence from management down the stretch. The 26-year-old allowed one run in 11 innings spanning two starts, recording 14 strikeouts to one walk. He will likely hold a long-reliever role in the bullpen.
