Wednesday, July 31 - 7:05 p.m.
Rome Braves (17-21, 53-54)
Frank Lafreniere (100.2 IP, 5.99 ERA, 4.04 FIP, 15.3 K%, 7.6 BB%, .349 BABIP)
Augusta GreenJackets (17-18, 55-49)
Edward Concepcion (2.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 3 K for A+ San Jose)
The San Francisco Giants have assigned Edward Concepcion to Augusta and will start him tonight. Concepcion last pitched for the GreenJackets in 2011, recording a 3.61 ERA in 52.1 relief innings. He was a reliever for San Jose last year, recording a 6.10 ERA in 48.2 innings, but he had 51 strikeouts.
Concepcion will be making his first start since a spot start last year, and he hasn't been a full-time starter since 2010 with Salem-Keizer. He isn't expected to go deep into the outing; it's only his fourth appearance of the season.
The GreenJackets will see another ground ball machine in Frank Lafreniere, who has a 52.4 percent ground ball rate this season. His ERA is much higher than his peripherals indicate it should be, which isn't surprising given he's a ground ball pitcher in the lower minors; a .349 batting average on balls in play doesn't help, either.
Lafreniere is a 23-year-old right-hander standing 6-foot-5, drafted in the 47th round in 2010. He had one of his worst outings against Augusta on May 13, allowing eight runs on nine hits in four innings in an 11-8 GreenJackets win. Joey Rapp and Trevor Brown both doubled off Lafreniere in the game, and Mitch Delfino went 2 for 5.
The GreenJackets are coming off facing a groundballer in Rome's Wes Parsons the night before. Parsons worked with a sinking fastball in the low-90s while adding a sweeping slider. Augusta continually hit the ball into the ground over seven innings, finding holes for eight hits but also putting across just two runs.
