Tuesday, July 23 - Augusta 10, Asheville 3
The GreenJackets broke through with their highest hit total of the season at 23 while scoring their most runs since June 29. A solid way to end a homestand for Augusta, which took three of four from Asheville.
Chuckie Jones went 4 for 5 with a double, giving him seven hits in the past two games. Four hits is a season high for the right fielder, prompting manager Mike Goff to say he hopes he keeps it up and becomes a run producer for the team.
Jones is showing what got him to this level. He has been on top of the ball over the past two games, squaring it up nearly every at-bat and roping the majority of them to left field. The double in tonight's game was an opposite-field liner, showing the ability to adjust to the location of the pitch. It's easily been the best two games I've seen from Jones this season.
Mitch Delfino went 4 for 6 with three doubles and three RBI. Delfino has been a very solid hitter over the past week, recording at least one double in six of his past seven games. He has two or more hits in four of those seven games, as well. Delfino is showing the ability to spray the ball with authority during the streak, with several of the doubles coming on hard liners to right-center.
Kendry Flores had another solid outing for Augusta, throwing six shutout innings on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He didn't have the strikeout stuff of his past few starts, but he had an effective two-seamer working that drove some balls into the ground. The pitch has good tailing action with a couple miles per hour off the four-seamer. Flores also had a good breaking ball, although it wasn't used as much as one would normally see from him.
Reliever Stephen Johnson came off the disabled list for his first appearance since July 1. He wasn't very sharp, giving up a couple hits and a walk, but he showed good stuff, popping the mitt with a mid-90s fastball and solid breaking ball. Once he gets back into a rhythm, Johnson should produce some good innings out of the bullpen down the stretch.
