Monday, July 22 - Asheville 7, Augusta 5
Monday's game was one of the biggest rollercoaster rides of the GreenJackets' season, and it ended in a tough way on a two-run double by Asheville shortstop Rosell Herrera in the 11th inning.
The GreenJackets had held Herrera to just two singles in the first two games of the series, with manager Mike Goff doing his best to keep him on the right side of the plate. Two singles in two games might sound pretty good, but Herrera entered Monday hitting .359/.440/.569 with 28 doubles and 15 home runs.
Herrera broke through with a roped double to right-center on a fastball by GreenJackets reliever Mason McVay. The shortstop went with the pitch and used his strong hands to line it to the opposite field. It proved to be the deciding hit.
Augusta held a two-run lead going into the eighth, but catcher Eliezer Zambrano allowed two consecutive passed balls that scored two runs, tying the game at 5 and eventually sending it to extra innings. The runs were charged to Ian Gardeck, who failed to get an out in the inning.
Augusta's Chuckie Jones had one of his best games this season, recording three hits and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. He hit a towering homer to left field in the seventh that put the GreenJackets ahead at the time, and he added a two-run double in the second. He was on top of all three hits, roping each to left field.
Trevor Brown was also impressive at the plate, recording three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Joey Rapp added two hits and a double.
GreenJackets starter Joe Biagini had solid swing-and-miss stuff in his start, tying his season high with nine strikeouts and inducing 11 swinging strikes in seven innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, with one run coming in the seventh on a homer.
Biagini showed a solid fastball that was commanded well while pairing it with a good breaking ball. His changeup flashed good sink and separation.
