Friday, July 5 - Charleston 2, Augusta 0
A Charleston RiverDogs pitcher carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the second consecutive night.
Cesar Vargas held a no-hitter until GreenJackets second baseman Alberto Robles broke it up with a single to lead off the bottom of the sixth. It was the only hit Augusta managed off a combination of Vargas and Ben Paullus.
Vargas threw strikes and changed speeds well. He wasn't overpowering, striking out three, but he induced a lot of weak contact from the GreenJackets, allowing just two line drives. He induced 11 fly balls to five ground balls.
The state of the GreenJackets offense came to a head in the ninth when Paullus struck out the side all looking. Augusta's hitting has disappeared in the first two games of the series, totaling one run and six hits. They have largely failed to attack the fastball early in the count and haven't been able to adjust to off-speed. It has resulted in weak contact, especially pop flies in the infield and shallow outfield.
GreenJackets starter Martin Agosta was shaky in his return off the disabled list, showing good command of his fastball but struggling to command his secondaries. He floated a changeup to Angelo Gumbs that was roped for an RBI double in the first, and he never gained a feel for his slider, missing both sides by either spinning it early out of the hand or choking it in the dirt.
Agosta left with two outs in the fifth with what Mike Goff said was a blister. Goff said his arm seemed to be back to strength and he was fine health-wise. His velocity held throughout the start.
Gumbs continued to be a pest for Augusta, doubling on a hard liner down the left field line that he turned on with tremendous bat speed. He also singled but was caught stealing.
Cito Culver reached base three times for Charleston on two doubles and a walk. Culver has the ability to spray the ball with some authority, but it's been at an inconsistent pace. He also committed an error on a botched grounder, but otherwise he's been steady at shortstop, as has Gumbs at second base.
