GreenJackets Wrap-up: Schumer's lead blown in loss

Wednesday, June 26 - Sand Gnats 5, GreenJackets 1

For the second time this season, Augusta starter Justin Schumer pitched five scoreless innings against Savannah. For the second time this season, his lead was blown by the bullpen.

Schumer allowed two hits over five scoreless innings, walking one and striking out five. He did the same May 26 at Savannah, throwing five scoreless on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Like that May start, Schumer held a one-run lead after leaving. And like that start, the lead was blown by reliever Brandon Farley, who allowed three runs in the sixth on Wednesday and one in the eighth in May.

Schumer entered the game with a 58.3 percent left-on-base rate, far below league average and a reason for a .312 batting average with runners on compared to .288 from the windup.

However, the right-hander improved on those numbers Wednesday by not allowing a hit with runners on and leaving six on base.

“Once I started getting some guys on base, I started going to the slider and changeup,” Schumer said. “(Eric) Sim was doing a good job calling pitches. I have a pretty good feel for those pitches. It worked out with guys on base to get some strikeouts.”

Sand Gnats starter Gabriel Ynoa allowed one run on five hits in six innings, not walking any and striking out four. Ynoa flashed an above-average fastball and changeup, with the chance for the change to reach plus territory. It thrives on deception from a quick arm and three-quarters slot, giving it arm-side fade. GreenJackets hitters were constantly in front of the pitch, resulting in a lot of fly balls in the later innings.

Ynoa's breaking ball is inconsistent but has the ability to flash as a solid third offering. If he can gain more feel and tighten the spin more consistently, it can make it as a major league pitch.

Augusta held Brandon Nimmo hitless over seven at-bats in the series, reaching once on a walk and striking out four times.
