Friday, June 21 - Kannapolis 12, Augusta 2
Not much to say for Augusta in the second game of the series.
Kannapolis starter Brandon Brennan held the GreenJackets to two unearned runs on three hits in seven innings. He only struck out two, benefiting from weak ground balls and avoiding hard contact, which is what he attempts to do with a two-pitch mix.
Brennan kept the ball off the heart of the plate for the most part, and GreenJackets hitters were unable to adjust to the outside corner. Several balls were rolled over to either side of the infield, and there were a few pop ups.
Augusta starter Joan Gregorio had easily his roughest start this season, allowing season highs in runs and earned runs with seven and six. He gave up a few hard hit balls, but more noticeable than that was the loss of command and control. Gregorio has been the best on the staff at spotting, but it failed him in several at-bats, especially in the sixth that culminated in two runs on wild pitches.
Gregorio also allowed a season-high three walks. He maintained his strikeout stuff, inducing 14 swinging strikes and striking out seven. But, as manager Mike Goff indicated after the game, Gregorio has to do a better job establishing the fastball early in the zone.
Kannapolis shortstop Tim Anderson recorded a ton of firsts, including his first hit, RBI and stolen base. He went 2 for 5 with two RBI and scored three times. He also continued to show ups and downs, booting a grounder and throwing it away at second base for two errors and a run. But he showed off his impressive release and good arm, as well.
Center fielder Jason Coats went oppo with a three-run homer to right field in the eighth, one of his three hits in the game. Keon Barnum has yet to tap into his raw power at the plate, but he picked up a ground-ball double for his second hit of the series. Micah Johnson continues to rake, picking up two hits, including a double, and stealing his 55th base.
