GreenJackets Wrap-up: Enns impresses in relief for Charleston

Thursday, May 30 - RiverDogs 4, GreenJackets 3

The GreenJackets managed to bring three across off RiverDogs starter Cesar Vargas in five innings, but the game ended when left-handed reliever Dietrich Enns entered in the sixth.

Enns flashed some of the best stuff from a lefty I've seen in some time at this level, working mid-90s with a sharp breaking slider and solid changeup. The fastball had boring action on right-handed batters, sawing off more than one Augusta hitter, while striking out six over four perfect innings.

The hardest hit ball off Enns was the last batter of the game, Mitch Delfino, who roped a grounder to third. Charleston's Dante Bichette Jr. fielded it cleanly for the final out.

GreenJackets manager Mike Goff said he was impressed with Enns, notably the way he attacked hitters from the left side and used his secondaries well.

The other left-hander to take the mound was also solid. GreenJackets starter Matt Lujan allowed three runs over six innings, walking two and striking out four. He induced 12 ground balls to four fly balls, avoiding hard contact for much of the outing. It's the best and longest start for Lujan over his first three this season.

Charleston's Danny Oh had three hits and an RBI. Claudio Custodio played the offensive hero for the RiverDogs, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Custodio scored the tying run and drove in the go-ahead run an inning apart.

Augusta's Shayne Houck hit his first home run of the season, a liner off the ad boards in left field. It came on a 3-1 fastball fat on the plate by Vargas.

Joe Rapp has a hit in three consecutive games and is 12 for 42 in his past 10 games, including nine RBI. These aren't eye-popping numbers, but Rapp is slowly coming around after a slow return from the disabled list, making hard contact at least once a night lately.

Expect a corresponding move from the GreenJackets soon, as shortstop Matt Duffy was placed on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle before the game.
