GreenJackets Wrap-up: Hagerstown jumps ahead early to take series opener

Wednesday, May 1 - Suns 5, GreenJackets 3

The GreenJackets came out flat when Justin Schumer gave up three hits, three walks and five runs while only recording two outs. If you take away the first inning, the GreenJackets win 3-0, so it's no surprise manager Mike Goff said there were positives to take away from this game.

One positive was the bullpen, which was again very solid, holding Hagerstown scoreless after the first inning. Brandon Farley and Steven Okert each pitched three scoreless innings. Okert didn't allow a hit, giving up just one walk with four strikeouts. Goff said Okert had his best arm speed so far this season, in his second outing since coming off the disabled list. The left-hander reportedly sat 89-91 with the fastball, while his sweeping curveball flashed plus several times. He also spun a few early and left a few out arm-side, but it's to be expected as he regains his feel.

The lineup managed just three hits, but they manufactured a few runs. Matt Duffy reached base all four times on three walks and a double. He has 17 walks to push his OBP over .400 for the season. Jesus Galindo picked up a hit and walk, as did Trevor Brown.

Hagerstown starter Ronald Pena has an above-average fastball that works in the low/mid-90s with a little run. He flashed a couple solid breaking pitches, but his secondaries showed why his strikeout totals are lagging behind. He uncorks quickly and can over-rotate at times, leaving his front shoulder open and resulting in missed spots. That helped lead to six walks.

Mike Goff:

"Schumer came out struggling tonight. Walks got him in trouble as they always do. He’s normally sharper than that. He just had one of those nights. We got down early and I was proud of our guys for battling back. They got us back in the ballgame. I thought our bullpen was outstanding. Got a lot of positives out of the game.

"We couldn’t string together any hits to give us a chance. It’s tough to bounce back with three hits. I expect these guys to bounce back tomorrow.

"I thought (Okert) had better arm speed tonight. Thought the ball was coming out of his hand much better, and that’s definitely a positive sign. For me, it’s the best arm speed I’ve seen out of him.

"We made some strides on the road. The offense was coming around a little bit. Tonight, I don't want to say we took a step backwards by any means from where we were two weeks ago. I expect these guys to come out tomorrow swinging. That's my expectation.

My expectation on Rapp is by the end of the weekend he'll be ready to go. We're hoping Sunday or Monday. "
