Lake Olmstead Stadium back in business

Even in the offseason, Lake Olmstead Stadium has received plenty of attention with Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver's recent attempts to drum up support for a downtown baseball stadium. While a possible new athletic complex remains only a dream, Lake Olmstead Stadium has once again come to life and area baseball fans can already catch live action at the city's largest baseball stadium.

The Augusta GreenJackets, set to begin their 23rd season of minor league baseball in April, are still in spring training mode in Arizona. But a few area high school and college baseball teams are taking advantage of the warm weather and open schedule by playing games at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

TODAY: Three private schools kick off the action this week when Westminster plays a double header. The Wildcats will face Curtis Baptist at 4 p.m., then Augusta Christian at 7 p.m.

TUESDAY: Aquinas vs. Lincoln County, 5 p.m.

THURSDAY: In college action, Augusta State vs. Anderson, 6 p.m.

SATURDAY, MARCH 20: Augusta State doubleheader vs. Georgia Southwestern, 1 p.m.

SUNDAY, MARCH 21: Augusta State vs. Georgia Southwestern, 1 p.m.

MONDAY, MARCH 22: Columbia County schools will get in on the action in two weeks when Lake Olmstead Stadium opens for Grovetown vs. Hephzibah at 4:30 p.m. and Evans vs. Harlem at 7 p.m.

TUESDAY, MARCH 23: In what will probably be the best quality baseball played at Lake Olmstead Stadium before the pros arrive, Augusta State will face USC Aiken in a rivalry game at 6:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, MARCH 27: Fox Creek vs. Ridge Spring-Monetta, 1 p.m.

For the high school games, a $10 ticket will get you into the stadium for a full day's worth of baseball as well as a future GreenJackets game and a GreenJackets hat.

That's not a bad deal for the baseball-starved fans out there.
