Aug. 27 meeting will help race organizers

Several weeks ago I noted that there was an effort underway to set up a meeting for those who are considering holding a fundraiser race. It’s now all set. Here’s the news release sent out recently by Randy DuTeau, from the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau:

 

The Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, in partnership with Fleet Feet Sports, will hold a race directors meeting for area event organizers on Tuesday, August 27, at the Columbia County CVB office in the Columbia County Government complex. Meeting topics will include course design, race logistics, event permitting, marketing, sponsorship and volunteers.

 

"Running and walking events have become very popular in our area, especially as fundraisers for local charities. This meeting will help event coordinators understand the steps to take to ensure a safe, fun and successful event", said CVB Executive Director Randy DuTeau.

 

The meeting also will provide information for race organizers who might be unfamiliar with Columbia County's new ordinance that requires approval for activities that use public streets, DuTeau said.

 

Meeting co-host Michael McCauley, owner of Fleet Feet Sports in Augusta will share his thoughts on event sponsorship, as well as the need for better coordination among local event organizers in choosing a date for their event.

 

"We love that more people are organizing events" said McCauley, "but when multiple races are scheduled on the same day, the attendance and fundraising capabilities at all of the events suffers. Our aim is to create a race calendar that will maximize participation at local races."

 

The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. The Columbia County CVB is located at 1000 Business Blvd. in the Columbia County Government Complex. The meeting is free, but attendees are requested to make a reservation by emailing SBlackburn@choosecolumbiacounty.com. That pretty much captures it. If you’re planning a race, you should put this meeting on your calendar. And if you’re a veteran of race planning, your attendance is even more important because you can share your experience with those who might not realize the logistics involved in setting up fundraisers.

Speaking of publicity for races, here are a couple of upcoming events:

  • The annual Action Ministries Action Dash will be held on Labor Day at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, 1330 Monte Sano Ave., Augusta. It’s a 5K and fun-run fundraiser for Action Ministries, and costs $25 for the 5K or $15 for the one-mile fun-run, with fees rising by $5 for same-day registration.

In addition to raising money for a great cause, one of the fun things about this run is that many of the participants dress up as “Action Heroes,” putting on costumes to run the very-hilly Hill area course.

  • The WSI Savannah River Run, a fundraiser for the United Way, will be held Nov. 2 at North Augusta’s Riverview Park. For all the details, go to http://wsiriverrun.org/
  • And while it won’t be held until December, go ahead and plan now to start registration Sept. 1 for the annual Jingle Jam, a 10K fundraiser run for SafeHomes of Augusta. This race, which starts and ends Dec. 6 at Evans Towne Center Park, is an absolute blast – and it’s for a wonderful cause. Like them on Facebook for updates and registration information.
