Shopgirl: Velvet pieces are perfect over-the-top gift card buys

Madewell’s velvet Beatriz mules would be a great splurge for your Christmas gift money. SPECIAL

Have you started to think about what you’re going to buy with any extra Christmas gift money or gift cards? I always try to force myself to buy something I would never spend my money on, something that seems just super extravagant or indulgent.

On my list, Madewell’s velvet Beatriz mules. They’re incredibly impractical, way over-the-top, but you can’t help but love them (especially at their $99 price tag!). Another velvet “too much” piece I love is H&M’s crushed velvet blazer that has a very structured, menswear look as a fun contrast to the super-girly velvet (another great buy at $69.99).

If you’re looking for another shoe option (which is a very on-trend use of velvet), check out Puma’s platform velour sneakers. These come with a rhinestone-embellished ankle strap, and hit about where a hi-top does. They’re a very fun look and come at a very attainable price of $130.

WHAT’S TRENDY: Apple’s AirPods, the wireless little white earplugs that work as headphones, are all set for an upgrade and a revamp in the new year. The little but expensive pieces of white plastic are sold out online until the new year, and despite initial negative reviews have been pretty successful in the consumer market.

This has led to Apple supposedly developing an even smaller version, for an unsurprisingly higher price - as leaked by an Apple analyst who specializes in predicting and projecting what Apple is working on bringing to market. This analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, also predicted that Apple will double production of AirPods to 28 million units in 2018. Pretty incredible for something that, at least for me, seemingly would be guaranteed lost within 30 minutes of owning.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE: Looking for New Year’s Eve plans that are affordable and close to home, but still festive and special?
