Shopgirl: reNew & Brew features local flavors from young chefs

FILE/STAFF Helms College Culinary School students will benefit from the annual reNew & Brew event set for Feb. 3.

Goodwill’s reNew&Brew event is coming up Friday, Feb. 3, and is sure to be a night full of great entertainment that goes to a great local and regional cause.

reNew&Brew benefits Helms College, the culinary and hospitality school education arm of Goodwill, and will feature service by Helms College students.

During the event there will be a silent auction featuring work by local artists using repurposed items from Goodwill stores, music by Keith Gregory and beer tastings from Georgia craft breweries will be paired with food prepared by Helms College students.

The event takes place from 7-11 p.m. at the Snelling Center, 3165 Washington Road next to Edgar’s Grille.

Tickets are available at and sponsorships are available.

WHAT’S TRENDY: These are stressful days, with a lot of arguing and opinionating from all sides. The solution is definitely to get off social media, but another solution might be right there on your smartphone.

There are a ton of stress-busting apps available, from Color by Disney (a coloring app on your smartphone that will surprise you with how calming it is to fill in little squares and lines that make up images from your favorite Pixar and Disney movies) to Aura (a free meditation app that personalizes meditations for you and allows you to set reminders).

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE: What a great time for sales - whether it’s Madewell or Bloomingdales, online shopping is looking really good right now.

I love Madewell’s Carrington blazer, cut down from $178 to $70, a streamlined blazer with a kind of cardigan vibe and grosgrain sash.

Another great deal you can find is at Nordstrom, where the ultimate cold weather brand, UGG, is up to 50 percent off.

The best sale going on right now, however, is at Bloomingdales, where serious cuts have been made to everyone’s favorite brands - from Marc Jacobs to Kate Spade - discounted by 60 percent or more.
