Shopgirl: Music society to present concert pianist Michiko Otaki

One of my favorite recurring Augusta cultural events is the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music series.

On Nov. 19, the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society will host Michiko Otaki in the Vola Jacobs Memorial piano recital.

Otaki is a concert pianist who has been featured in performances across the globe, ranging from Washington’s National Gallery to Carnegie Hall, and has traveled with the Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic and Slovak Sinfonietta.

She will perform a program featuring The Sonata No. 15, Op. 28 “Pastoral” (1801) by Beethoven; a suite of pieces titled Down Jersey Scenes written in 2013 by Paul Mack Somers; the French Suite by Bach; and three dances by Chopin.

Music begins at 7:30 p.m. at Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre, 2500 Walton Way. Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for students. Visit hjcms.org for more.

WHAT’S TRENDY: Dresses are back in full force this winter season, with a heavy leaning toward silky textures and cut-out designs, as well as simple shapes and lines.

I love Missguided’s oversized pocket front dress, which comes in a warm beige color that would be a great backdrop for any accessories you might want to rotate through this holiday season.

I also like Need Supply Co.’s silk slip dress, which comes in a flattering square neckline and hearkens back to 1990s minimalist styles.

For something a little more adventurous, Topshop has a sweater-separates set that comes in a contrast stripe and reminds me of something an ice skater would wear on a casual day.

WHAT’S NEW: If you’re part of the American populous looking for exit strategies following the presidential election, there’s an app for that.

Maple Match is a dating app specializing in helping Americans meet Canadians who are single and sympathetic to their plight. In fact, the island of Cape Breton on Canada’s Atlantic coast marketed itself earlier this year as a refuge spot for American voters.

The Maple Match app is so popular that there is currently a waiting list, but the site promises next steps will be unveiled soon. You can find more information and get on the waiting list at www.MapleMatch.com.
