Clemson's defensive coordinator turns in resignation

Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning resigned Tuesday, one day after the Tigers officially hired Dabo Swinney as head coach.

Koenning said in a statement released by the school his role with the team next season was in question so he decided to leave before Clemson's bowl game to have more job options.

Koenning had been defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the past four seasons. Clemson's defense led the ACC in scoring defense and ranked ninth in the nation allowing just 16.6 points per game.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE: Russell Wilson helped turn his team's year around and push the Wolfpack within reach of a bowl invitation with his brilliant late-season play.

One day after becoming the first freshman quarterback picked to the all-conference team, Wilson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year after leading the Wolfpack to four wins in a row to end the regular season.

The redshirt freshman earned 62 of 67 votes from members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, easily outdistancing Virginia Tech tailback Darren Evans and Miami linebacker Sean Spence .

PENN STATE: Coach Joe Paterno is back at work a week after undergoing hip-replacement surgery. A team spokesman says the 81-year-old Paterno held a squad meeting Sunday.

NEW MEXICO STATE: Fired coach Hal Mumme , ending a four-year run.

The Aggies lost seven consecutive games to end the season 3-9 and 1-7 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The former Kentucky coach had a 11-38 record as New Mexico State's head coach, but five of those victories were against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision.

CINCINNATI: Coach Brian Kelly says he's happy with the steps the No. 13 Bearcats are taking to upgrade their football facilities, and he's not interested in any job elsewhere.

CONNECTICUT: Tailback Andre Dixon was arrested early Tuesday on a drunken-driving charge and suspended indefinitely from the football team.

KENTUCKY: Coach Rich Brooks says freshman quarterback Randall Cobb is doubtful to play in the Wildcats' bowl game after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
