CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Bart Blanchard accounted for three touchdowns and Andre Roberts had 135 yards receiving and a score to lead The Citadel to a 34-14 win over Western Carolina in the Bulldogs' Southern Conference opener on Saturday.
Blanchard, who completed 19 of 28 passes, connected with Roberts for a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter and the quarterback ran for a 15-yard score in the second to give the Bulldogs (3-1) a 21-0 lead.
Roberts finished with 10 catches to set the school's career record for receptions with 139. The previous record was 133 by Victor Frazier from 1982-85.
The Citadel went ahead 31-0 in the third when Blanchard had a 9-yard rushing score. He threw for 265 yards and two interceptions for the Bulldogs and ran for 85 yards on 11 carries.
Asheton Jordan led The Citadel with 110 yards rushing on 18 carries.
Andy Horn, who threw for 115 yards, threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Adams Hearns in the third for the Catamounts (2-3).
Hearns finished with seven catches for 40 yards.
FURMAN 35, CHATTANOOGA 10
In Greenville, S.C., Jordan Sorrells threw three touchdown passes to lead Furman.
Sorrells completed 12 of 20 passes for 224 yards and no interceptions for the Paladins (3-1, 1-0). Chris Truss caught three passes for 158 yards and a touchdown.
Mike Brown put the Paladins on the board first with a 2-yard touchdown run at the 12:17 mark of the first quarter, and Masharn Austin recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown to give Furman a 14-0 lead at the start of the second quarter. Craig Camay hit a 33-yard field goal for the Moccasins (1-4, 0-1) to make it 14-3 at the half.
ELON 23, SAMFORD 17
In Elon, N.C., Andrew Wilcox kicked three field goals, including the only score in the final quarter with 4:59 remaining, to lift Elon.
Scott Riddle was 18 of 33 with two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Phoenix (4-1, 2-0).
Brandon Newsome added 100 yards rushing on 18 carries.
Chris Evans had 23 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs (2-2, 0-1).
A 27-yard Wilcox field goal marked the only points for either team in the first quarter, and Samford took a 7-3 lead with 12:27 to go in the second when Dustin Taliaferro connected with Jonathan Lowery on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
Riddle threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Lance Camp. He also connected with A.J. Harris for a 91-yard passing score to give Elon a 17-10 lead in the second.
The Bulldogs tied the score at 17-17 when Evans scored on a 2-yard run with 11:31 left in the third quarter.
Wilcox would put the Phoenix ahead 20-17 with a 35-yard field goal at the close of the third, and then sealed the win with a 45-yard kick in the final quarter.
