Augusta commissioners approved a plan last week to give $10 million to the Medical College of Georgia to buy the Gilbert Manor property so the school can expand, but not everybody was happy about it. Not even some of the commissioners who voted for it.

It was another slow week at City Hall. City Administrator Fred Russell was off with the Tour de Georgia. Augusta commissioners were getting ready for their annual Association County Commissioners of Georgia convention in Savannah this weekend. Mandatory training, don't you know.

Augusta Commissioner J.R. Hatney said it was "hard to say no and difficult to say yes" to a zoning request that would allow a two-story Marriott Hotel to be built off Marks Church Road next to the Kingston subdivision. Therefore, he did the only thing a politician can do under such circumstances. He abstained.

Nothing much was cooking at City Hall last week since everybody was either out of town, at the Masters Tournament or in the grocery store shopping or the kitchen cooking for a party. So I've taken a break from politics and will indulge in one of my favorite subjects -- cooking and cookbooks.

Augusta had a new football stadium for a couple of days last week. It was in the parking lot behind Bell Auditorium. The seating was terrible because there were no stands, which would have encouraged standing-room crowds, which some folks might have taken for a sellout.
