Gas prices, shortages don't slow down city officials

That was the big question last week. It was like deja vu -- the '70s all over again. Long lines at pumps, fistfights. Made me want to get out my love beads and start baking my own bread again. One thing was definitely different from the '70s though. Back then, we didn't wait in line to pay $4 a gallon and feel lucky to get it.

I hardly know where to begin with the Coliseum Authority, so I'll just start with what they did first. And that was vote to negotiate a letter of intent or contract with Atlanta promoter Jerry Dickerson for his consulting services for an 18,000-to-20,000-seat arena in downtown Augusta.

OK, I missed you too last week. Our switchboard operator Pat Burton said some of you called to ask why there was no City Ink in last Sunday's newspaper. So that's why I'm writing this, although I'm still technically on vacation -- if you want to call it that.

CITY ADMINISTRATOR: Fred "The Magician" Russell tried to sell this year's $24.68 property-tax increase as a reduction, and at least one TV reporter bought it and announced on air that property taxes were going down this year.
Dilapidated houses fill void of slow news week

Things were so slow at City Hall last week, WJBF-TV (Channel 6) reporter George Eskola was out showing pictures of dilapidated houses in Augusta again, and I was tracking down rumors about 10th District Congressional incumbent Paul Broun's telephone polls.
