The Augusta Chronicle, in
conjunction with the community-wide Celebrate 2000 initiative, honor the contributions
local African-Americans have made to our community.
Local middle and high school students were invited to write essays on local blacks for Black
History Student Essay Contest. Seventy-five student entered the contest sponsored by Delta House Inc.,
Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History and The Chronicle.
The top three essays in each division were submitted by students who provided thoughtful commentary
about the leaders who inspire them.

The museum has three exhibits that focus on local blacks during the antebellum period,
reconstruction and the civil rights movement.
The Morris Museum of Art has a special exhibit this month displaying
the works three black Georgia artists and by kicking off a new educational
program to teach children about black history.
