Area labor market grows in October

Total employment in the Augusta-Aiken metro area grew by 0.2 percent in October, the Georgia Department of Labor said Thursday.

The six-county Augusta area's work force grew by 400, from 214,900 in September to 215,300 in October.

Statewide Labor Department figures show Georgia added 15,200 payroll jobs during the month. However, the state's jobless rate increased 0.1 percent to 4.7 percent in October because more jobless residents were added to the unemployment rolls while more job seekers entered the work force at that level.

Italian firm brings jobs to Barnwell

An Italian distributor of high-end fragrance containers and tableware products said Wednesday that it will locate its warehouse and distribution operations at the Barnwell County Airport Industrial Park in Barnwell, S.C.

The Luigi Bormioli Corp. facility, which will supply retailers in the U.S. and Canada, represents a $3.25 million investment and will create 20 jobs, according to Barnwell County and the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

The family-owned company said in a statement that its reasons for choosing Barnwell included its proximity to the Port of Charleston.

Consumer prices rose in October

WASHINGTON --- Consumer inflation posted another elevated reading in October as energy prices shot up by the fastest pace in five months.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that its Consumer Price Index rose by 0.3 percent last month, the second straight month with inflation at that level. The acceleration was occurring because of another jump in energy prices and continued increases in food costs.

Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, continued to rise at a more moderate rate -- by 0.2 percent for the fifth consecutive month.
