The Boll Weevil Cafe & Sweetery is kicking off the new year with a renovation project and plans to switch to new ownership.
The restaurant at 10 Ninth St. will be closed until Thursday to make major renovations to the kitchen area, said managing partner William Harrison.
Harrison and his father, current owner George Harrison, are putting in new sheetrock walls and wall covering and cleaning the kitchen equipment.
The project started on New Year's Eve, William Harrison said.
"I'm buying the restaurant, and we have to bring everything up to the new codes. We may as well do everything at once," he said.
Harrison, who recently moved back to the Augusta area and has experience in the restaurant industry, said he hopes the sale will be finalized by the end of January.
"Everything will stay the same. Just new ownership," he said.
George Harrison opened The Boll Weevil at the same downtown location in 1991.
