Two downtown Augusta television stations will be sharing services starting in January.
WJBF Channel 6 and WAGT Channel 26 announced Monday that their parent companies have signed a letter of intent indicating that WJBF would provide sales, news and other operational services for WAGT.
Richmond, Va.-based Media General owns ABC affiliate WJBF at 1001 Reynolds St., and Mishawaka, Ind.-based Schurz Communications Inc. owns WAGT, the market's NBC affiliate, at 905 Broad St.
WAGT will manage programming other than local news and fulfill additional obligations required by the Federal Communications Commission, the stations announced.
The stations also will develop a plan to share operating facilities.
"We are very proud of the staff and management of WAGT and their commitment to their community. But it has become clear that the current economic conditions will only make it increasingly difficult to operate as we have in the past," Marci Burdick, senior vice president for Schurz Communications, said in a release.
"There has been a mutual trust and respect between our two companies for many years. We believe the new agreement allows the best of both companies to be leveraged for the benefit of the viewers and advertisers in the CSRA," she added.
Calls to the stations for further information were not returned Monday.
