Urban Outfitters Inc. is outfitting its Edgefield County facility with 100 more employees.
The Pennsylvania-based apparel and furniture retailer announced Tuesday that it is expanding its wholesale distribution center in Trenton, S.C., and moving some call center operations.
Urban Outfitters moved into its 459,000-square-foot facility in the Edgefield County Industrial Park in 2005. It employs 280 people, said John Kyees, the chief financial officer.
In Edgefield, Urban Outfitters ships merchandise from its Free People wholesale division, which goes to 1,700 stores nationally, Mr. Kyees said.
"In these times of economic uncertainty, it is gratifying to have companies such as Urban Outfitters adding jobs," said John Troutman, the chairman of the Economic Development Partnership. "Urban is truly a visionary company in the specialty retail sector, and this shows in their sales growth."
Fred Humes, the executive director of the partnership, said Urban Outfitters cited a good work force and business climate as its reasons for expanding.
Mr. Kyees said the company is growing in store and catalog sales. The additional workers are needed to handle the growth.
Mr. Kyees said some of the jobs are being added from the relocation of some of its call center operations in Philadelphia. About 80 of the Trenton employees already handle sales calls.
The company anticipates total sales in the current year to exceed $1.5 billion with a compounded annual sales growth of 29 percent in the past five years.
Urban Outfitters Inc. operates 132 Urban Retail stores in North America and Europe and 115 Anthropologie stores.
