ATHENS, Ga. -- A major economic development project in Athens appears to be in the works.
State and local officials won’t comment, but a series of meetings held Thursday and scheduled for today indicate that a new industrial plant is coming to the area.
Both the Athens-Clarke and Oconee County commissions called meetings for 8 a.m. today to discuss real estate transactions.
The Orkin tract, a 920-acre parcel off Georgia Highway 316, is the only large industrial tract straddling both counties.
The two counties’ industrial development authorities, which facilitate bond issues for manufacturers, met separately behind closed doors Thursday night, also to discuss real state, an exception to the state open-meetings law.
