With four veterans gone, the Briarwood girls basketball team needed a leader, and Pate would be the one for coach Clayton Parrish.
“I definitely think I needed to step up and fill the leadership position,” Pate said.
She has filled that role all season, but Pate has turned it on lately as the Lady Bucs are 6-1 in region play and haven’t lost in 2012.
Pate is averaging close to 20 points and 15 rebounds per game.
Though Parrish said asking a player to continue to average those numbers could be hoping for a lofty standard, Briarwood will need Pate’s consistency to remain a challenger in the region.
“She’s a joy to coach,” Parrish said. “I really enjoy working with her. She has an opportunity to be a really special player.
