Lincoln County at Aquinas

This is easily the game of the week. Can Aquinas finally beat the Red Devils? For 31 games in a row in the series, Aquinas has been handed a loss. But, at least this season, each team probably can make a fair case as to why it’ll win. Because the Irish have Brendan Douglas, I think Aquinas breaks the long losing streak.

It’s now the second week in October, meaning Heisman talk has gained steam, with most of it about West Virginia’s Geno Smith, whose numbers are plain silly.

But what about the area’s equivalent to the Heisman? Who are the top Player of the Year contenders for high school football?

Hancock Central at Aquinas

The 3-1 Bulldogs have looked impressive – no shame in that 43-0 loss to Buford – and are 1-0 in the region after easily beating Warren County. But Aquinas is a different animal, an undefeated one, even. The Irish will be 5-0.

Aquinas, 28-7

Wayne County at Burke County

Expect the accolades and impressive numbers to continue to pour in for Donquell Green. The junior should get another three touchdowns or more this week, and 150+ rushing yards are possible if he plays enough. Bears roll.

-Not much has changed this week, with Nos. 1 through 9 the same. Also, just like it was a week ago, the top four have separated themselves from everyone else.

-Augusta Christian is the only new team to the poll. The Lions replace Evans, who lost 34-6 to a very good Warner Robins team.

Greenbrier at Jones County

This is the region opener for both schools, and Greenbrier had two weeks to prepare. It’s also the first meeting since 2005, when the Wolfpack won by 29. Though Greenbrier has won three of four meetings, the Greyhounds’ offense is better than Greenbrier’s.

-The top four are way in front of everyone else, and you could make a case that Strom Thurmond or Thomson or Washington County could/should be No. 1. But I think Thomson’s wins against Burke County and St. Pius X are incredibly impressive.

Josey at Aquinas

This is just the seventh time the Eagles and Irish have met, and the first since 1977. Josey leads 3-2-1, but Aquinas is one of the best teams in Class A. The Irish should have success running the ball and will be 3-0 heading into region play.

Some poll thoughts:

-Another week, another No. 1 ranking for Thomson. The Bulldogs have been great this season, and the 21-14 win against St. Pius X only strengthens their grip on the top spot.

Burke County at Coffee

This should help gauge where the Bears are at right now. How much have they improved since the season-opening defeat to Thomson? A road trip to play a Class AAAAAA school will be a great test, but it’s one I don’t see Burke County winning.
