-There are no changes to my poll this week. North Augusta did lose to Dutch Fork, but I kept it at No. 5. I think, based on talent and what they’ve accomplished, the Yellow Jackets are the fifth-best team in the area.

Richmond Academy at Cross Creek

The winner takes second place in the subregion, and Richmond Academy has the edge thanks to its line and the dangerous C.J. Welcher. The Musketeers have scored a combined 90 points the past two weeks and will get more than enough in this game.

-There’s no debate for No. 1. It’s Thomson, and only Thomson, with a case for No. 1. Strom Thurmond is impressively unbeaten as well, but the Bulldogs have great wins. No one else can match the Burke County-Washington County combo.

Thomson at Washington County

Finally. It’s time for these two to play one another, and they’ll do it as unbeatens. The top two teams in the Power Poll, Thomson and Washington County will be battling for the region’s top spot. The Bulldogs have a habit of winning close games this season, but the Golden Hawks have the edge, especially because they’re at home.

-So long, Aquinas. The Irish drop out after a 28-point loss to Wilkinson County. Since leading Lincoln County 10-0, Aquinas has been outscored 62-17. But the Irish do play 1-6 Warren County this Friday, so the losing streak should stop at two.

Josey at Harlem

The Eagles go on the road to end a five-game slide, but Harlem hasn’t fared much better by losing six of its first seven. Josey has also won the past two meetings, so if it avoids big turnovers, it’ll get victory No. 2 this year.

Josey, 14-12

Aquinas at Wilkinson County

How will the Irish do after the heartbreaking loss to Lincoln County? That’s going to be key as Aquinas visits a strong Warriors squad. Aquinas won by three a year ago at home; expect another close game.

Lincoln County at Aquinas

This is easily the game of the week. Can Aquinas finally beat the Red Devils? For 31 games in a row in the series, Aquinas has been handed a loss. But, at least this season, each team probably can make a fair case as to why it’ll win. Because the Irish have Brendan Douglas, I think Aquinas breaks the long losing streak.

It’s now the second week in October, meaning Heisman talk has gained steam, with most of it about West Virginia’s Geno Smith, whose numbers are plain silly.

But what about the area’s equivalent to the Heisman? Who are the top Player of the Year contenders for high school football?
