Games of March 11

Hitters:

Jackie Bradley, Red Sox: 1-3, 3B, RBI, BB. Great makeup and instincts will help his tools play up. Bradley relies on a solid defensive profile.

Kolten Wong, Cardinals: 2-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI. A plus hit tool will help a power tool that could be better than some think.

Edward Salcedo, Braves: 1-2, HR, 2 RBI. Salcedo has so much potential in the frame and pop, but the hit tool has to develop further.

If the Braves signed Ervin Santana to a multi-year contract, many would be up in arms. There's a reason it took this long for Santana to sign a deal. Major League Baseball teams simply didn't want to commit long-term.

Instead, the Braves signed him to one year worth $14.1 million Wednesday. The fact that it's just one year is OK for the Braves.

Games of March 10

Hitters:

Nick Castellanos, Tigers: 3-4, HR, 4 RBI. Castellanos continues to slug, hitting his second homer of the spring. He has four extra-base hits in 29 plate appearances.

Steven Moya, Tigers: 3-6, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI. Moya is a huge human with elite raw power, but the hit tool is in serious question.

Stephen Piscotty, Cardinals: 1-1, HR, 3 RBI, BB. Outstanding bat and arm for right field. Limited power potential, but the bat will carry.

Games of March 7

Hitters:

Jonathan Schoop, Orioles: 1-1, HR, RBI

Kolten Wong, Cardinals: 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI

Oscar Taveras, Cardinals: 1-3, 2B. Tavares' first spring training game. He followed with right hamstring tightness that will cause him to miss a couple games.

Pitchers:

Sean Gilmartin, Twins: 2 IP, 2 H, 3 K

Marcus Stroman, Blue Jays: 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R/ER, BB, K

Rafael Montero, Mets: 2 IP, H, R, K

B.J. Upton’s swing has changed some, but whether it’s the dramatic difference he needs remains to be seen.

Upton’s 2013 was a perfect storm of bad habits rolled into a swing that was all arms and generated no lower-body help. It led to slow bat speed, whiffing through velocity and not being able to drive anything up the middle.

Games of March 6

Hitters:

Micah Johnson, White Sox: 3-5, SB. Johnson has one of the best run tools in the minor leagues. Bat should play average. Raw doesn't get enough credit.

Kyle Parker, Rockies: 1-2, 2B, RBI. Parker needs his power at full potential to max his value. The only other noticeable tool is a solid arm.

Games of March 5

Hitters:

Xander Bogaerts, Red Sox: 1-2, HR, 2 RBI, BB. A personal favorite of mine. Bogaerts has elite aptitude to match the excellent tools, and he should be successful in the majors for a long time.

Christian Vazquez, Red Sox: 2-3. Vazquez has been drawing rave reviews for his catching defense this spring, and prospect writers are saying "told you so." If Vazquez can hit even a lick, he's a first-division regular.

Baseball Prospectus announced a step forward with its catcher framing data Monday, which included putting framing numbers into every player profile on the website. I sing the publication’s praises nearly every day with links and comments on its content, so it’s no surprise that I find this information exciting.

Games of March 4

Hitters:

Gregory Polanco, Pirates: 2-3, 2B, RBI. Five-tool talent from a big frame. It's only a matter of time before he's wreaking havoc on the NL Central.

Brandon Nimmo, Mets: 1-2, RBI. Nimmo didn't stand out at the plate like I expected in Savannah last season, but he's built like a rock and is a great athlete.

Cesar Puello, Mets: 1-2, 2B. Great athlete with plus power potential, but has a Biogenesis connection hovering over his name.
