Larkin Steele and Aiken Equine Rescue will host the Hoofs & Hounds Extravaganza on Saturday.

This family-friendly event will benefit the Aiken Equine Rescue and the Aiken SPCA.

Activities include pony rides, face painting, pumpkin painting, a tack sale, equine demonstrations, canine agility and obedience demonstrations and dog and cat adoptions.

There will also be a silent auction on items such as art, food and bed and breakfast stays.

All-American Pet Brands and invite you to enter the Cutest Dog Competition. The contest began August 1 and runs for 12 weeks.

To enter, owners must upload a photo of their precious pooch at Photos are then voted on by the public.

Each week, the top vote-getter wins $500 and advances to the semi-finals.

Voters will narrow the field to 4 finalists and the grand prize winner will be chosen by a panel of judges on Thanksgiving Day.

A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue Headquarters, 3910 Desoto Drive in Martinez.

The cost is $5 per animal and 100 vaccinations will be available. Dogs should be on leashes and cats in carriers.

In 2008, Columbia County had 12 confirmed cases of rabies and 6 so far this year with several more awaiting test results, according to Columbia County Emergency Management Director Pam Tucker.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) employees selected 50 each of the most unusual cat and dog names from the company's database of more than 470,000 insured pets and then whittled them down by voting for the 10 quirkiest names in each category.

The winning pets owners revealed how they came up with such whacky names for their furry companions.

A 4-year-old London boy accidentally flushed his 1-week-old cocker spaniel puppy down the toilet while attempting to give him a bath. A drain service company was able to locate the pup in a drain pipe using special camera equipment. Here's the video:
