State playoff football begins this week for some local South Carolina teams. Fox Creek, Williston-Elko and Ridge Spring-Monetta will see their postseasons begin. Silver Bluff and Strom Thurmond earned a first-round bye in a new-look Class AA playoff system, and the big boys in Class AAAA (North Augusta, Aiken, South Aiken) have one more week of regular season play. Here's what I expect to see this week:
Season picks: 45-22
Last week: 6-1
Class A Division II first round
The Region 3-AAA play-in/crossover games are next week, so this week's contests will finalize the seedings.
Region 3-AAA games:
Burke County at Butler
After a close win against the Golden Hawks a week ago, the Bears will win a little easier this time. The Bulldogs have hopes of an upset, but Burke County has too many weapons and should contain Butler's dangerous ground game.
Burke County, 35-14
Josey at Harlem
Tonight marks the end of the regular season for most local teams in South Carolina, yet there is much to be determined concerning postseason play. So grab a coat, set the DVR to record Game 7 and head out to one of these games:
Season picks: 39-21
Last week: 8-0
Ridge Spring-Monetta (4-5, 3-4) at Fox Creek (7-2, 5-2)
Watch Wayne Staats, Chris Gay and Billy Byler talk about games with region title implications this week, then see a special guest appearance from fashion writer Gracie Shepherd, who breaks down the best and worst dressed teams in the area.
It's hard to believe the season has flown by this quickly, but Williston-Elko will play its final regular season game this week. Other teams (North Augusta, Aiken, South Aiken) have two games left, and the importance grows each week as we near the playoffs. The spotlight is on Region 4-A this week.
Season picks: 31-21
Last week: 6-2
Fox Creek (7-1, 5-1) at Williston-Elko (7-2, 7-0) ***Thursday***
