Football season arrived Sunday night when the New Orleans Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL's preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game.

Four teams remain. Four teams are each one win away from the coveted achievement of practicing and playing through Thanksgiving. There are no easy match ups anymore. When it comes to teams most likely to win a state title, I'd rank the remaining teams in this order: Strom Thurmond, Williston-Elko, North Augusta, Silver Bluff. But teams can't worry about the state finals this week, they've got to get past the state quarterfinals or (in Willy-Elko's case) the state semifinals. Here's what I expect to see this week:

On the GHSA side, schools compete in the second round. But in GISA, teams are battling for the right to play for a state championship.

Laney at Carver (Columbus)

It was a memorable win for the Wildcats this past Friday, when they beat Morgan County to win a state playoff game for the first time since 2006. But it's going to be difficult to advance to the next round in Class AA, as Carver is 10-1 -- only loss to Buford -- and has held eight of 11 foes to single digits. Expect Laney's season to end here.

Carver, 42-14

Falcons coach Mike Smith is getting hammered for going for it on fourth-and-inches deep in Atlanta territory (the 29-yard line to be exact) in overtime. As you know by now, the gamble failed. Michael Turner got stuffed in the backfield, and John Kasay knocked in a chip-shot field goal.

The Augusta area is in full playoff mode with Class AAAA joining the others this week. Only the good teams are left now. Keep in mind, coach of the year and player of the year awards are still up for grabs, and I'd say they're both wide open.
