Dear Principal:
The Augusta Chronicle and The Lucy C. Laney Museum are sponsoring an essay competition open to all middle and high school students. This competition allows students to showcase their writing abilities while researching an integral and fascinating segment of our local landscape and history.
Students are asked to compose essays on present African Americans heroes that have inspired their lives.
Winning essays will be selected based on content, historical accuracy, depth of research and grammar. Students are urged to approach the topic from a new perspective and to consider all topics. Prizes will be awarded in both the middle and high school categories.
In addition, a selection of essays will be published in a special section of The Augusta Chronicle during Black History Month.
All submitted essays will be kept on file at the Lucy C. Laney Museum where they will be distributed to those seeking more information on Augusta History.
- Essays are to be no longer than 350 words.
- Essays can be typed or neatly hand written.
- Essays must be accompanied with student’s full name, grade and name of school
- Students can submit as many essays as they like.
- A reference sheet must accompany each essay - at least two references required.
- Historical accuracy will be verified by prominent Augusta historians/educators.
- Deadline for essays is February 8th, 2007. Return essays to: Kimberly Bush, The Augusta Chronicle, 725 Broad Street, Augusta, GA 30903
This project is a worthy exercise in writing, research and history; I hope you will promote it to your students and colleagues. Students can take pride in knowing that their work will be read and utilized by many and that they are taking an active role in promoting Augusta's glorious and diverse heritage. Please give me a call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Bush
