Ball will help keep memories of '08 run

In summer, the song sings itself.

-- William Carlos Williams

As we saw this week end, the Augusta GreenJackets won their first championship since 1999. It capped one of the most successful years in Augusta baseball history -- both on the field and at the gate.

I thought about this Tuesday night while the team played its last home game at Lake Olmstead Stadium. In fact, I decided to mark the occasion by getting several of our town's best baseball fans to autograph a ball.

In the cold months ahead, it will remind me what a really great baseball season we had. Thanks to those who signed it. I know writing your name on a baseball is harder than it looks.

The ones I can make out include: Ernest Odom , Jimmy Melton , Bob and Dot Gleason , Ed Presnell , Bill Tilt , Lloyd Creech , Kathie Hunter , J. Tom Lifsey , Connie McCoy , Margaret , Arthur , Ed , Jerry , George , Jeri and Stan .

SCHOOL DAZE: The kids are back in school and ... you know how that is. Ron Freeman , a teacher at Silver Bluff High School, shares this:

"I missed the scheduled date for the school pictures. So when I heard the photographer was in the library, I decided to go and see if I could get my picture taken. Once there, the photographer said, 'No, I'm sorry, but today is senior pictures, not makeup pictures.'

"I then figured out I didn't get my picture taken because: A. I wasn't senior enough, or B. They didn't have enough makeup."

HURRICANE HUNTERS: A late postcard from Pensacola, Fla., announces: "We're here to see Nikki House marry Ben Farr , both formerly of Thomson. It's the first time here for all of us. The beaches are beautiful and sparsely inhabited right now."

Signed: Kermit and Jackie , of Warrenton, Ga.; Randy, Teresa , Barry , Jamie and Cami , of Thomson; Sabrina , of Stapleton, Ga.; Michael , Stephanie , Breanna and Boone , from Gibson, Ga.; Tong and Jessica , of Thomson; and Chad and Destiny , of Grovetown.

(Please excuse any names I got wrong. That was very small print.)

Also, Sandra and Shirley and David Johnson , of Augusta, send greetings from Las Vegas.

And John Pilcher , of Augusta, made his own postcard showing the welcome center in Wedowee, Ala. The smallish structure looks about the size of a lawn mower shed.

"We couldn't find a card, so we made one," he and Julie write.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Scott Gay , of Waynesboro, Ga., says: If the biggest seller of books is cookbooks and the second-biggest seller of books is diet books, then we could make money on a book about how not to eat what we just learned to cook.

TODAY'S JOKE: Here's one shared by Charlie Williams .

A husband, the owner of a new car, was somewhat reluctant to allow his wife to drive his prize possession, even to the grocery store, which was a few blocks from the house.

After she insisted, he finally relented, cautioning her as she departed, "Remember, if you have an accident, the newspaper will print your age."
