BRAVES: Placed struggling reliever Jonny Venters on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow impingement. Left-hander Luis Avilan was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Venters is 3-3 with a 4.45 ERA this season.


GIANTS: Second baseman Freddy Sanchez will have back surgery and miss the entire season. Manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that Sanchez will have a discectomy next week.

PHILLIES: General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says Ryan Howard has been making progress in his rehabilitation for an Achillies injury, and the first baseman could make his return to the major leagues this weekend.


RAYS: Luke Scott has set a club record for futility by going 39 consecutive at-bats without a hit.

Scott broke the record of Jose Cruz Jr., who went 37 at-bats without a hit in 2004.


DODGERS: Shortstop Dee Gordon has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb that will require surgery, and he’s expected to miss six weeks.
