CUBS : Greg Maddux and Ferguson Jenkins played in different eras, but they used similar styles -- and wore the same jersey number -- to become two of the best pitchers in the team's history. Their No. 31 was retired before Sunday's game against Florida.

"The fun part of doing what we did was putting that uniform on," Jenkins said. "You were at home on that field."

With their families sitting beside them, Jenkins and Maddux each gave a brief speech. Maddux's jersey was raised in right and Jenkins, a Hall of Famer, had his number go in left.

Maddux retired in December as the eighth-winningest pitcher in major league history with 355 victories. The Braves are scheduled to retired his number in July.

"This game gives you so much everyday you play it, and when you stop playing it keeps giving," Maddux said. "Sometimes you feel guilty about it."

NATIONALS: Right-hander Mike MacDougal signed a non-guaranteed, minor league contract with the team, which assigned the reliever to Triple-A Syracuse.

BREWERS: Left fielder Ryan Braun was out of the lineup for the second game in a row against Arizona because of a stiff back.
