YANKEES: Alex Rodriguez took another step toward rejoining the team after hip surgery, batting seven times in an extended spring training game against Pittsburgh minor leaguers.


Rodriguez grounded a single between third base and shortstop in his final at-bat Friday, finishing 1-for-6 with a walk as a designated hitter for the second consecutive day.

- Right fielder Nick Swisher left Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels after brusing his right elbow when he was hit by a pitch from Jered Weaver in the first inning. X-rays were negative, and Swisher is day to day.

RED SOX: Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to make his first minor league rehab start on Tuesday.

Matsuzaka has been on the 15-day DL since April 15 with a mild right shoulder strain.

RANGERS: Placed outfielder Josh Hamilton on the 15-day DL because of a strained left rib cage muscle.

TWINS: Catcher Joe Mauer was activated from the DL after missing the first month with a back injury.

INDIANS: Designated infielder Tony Graffanino for ass-ignment and recalled three players from Triple-A Columbus.

ATHLETICS: Third baseman Eric Chavez is back on the DL He was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm.
