MLB Notes

CARDINALS: Claimed minor league third baseman Brian Barden off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis.

The 26-year-old Barden was on the Diamondbacks' opening-day roster for the first time in his career. He was 1-for-12 in eight games before being optioned to Triple-A Tucson in May. The Diamondbacks designated him for assignment on Aug. 3. Barden hit .269 with two homers and 29 RBI in 83 games at Tucson.

BREWERS: Have enough talent to win their division and the right manager to take them there.

That's the assessment of Hall of Famer Robin Yount, who served on the Brewers' coaching staff last year and continues to follow the club closely.

"I think these guys honestly believe they can win this thing and I'd like to see it happen because I think they can, too," said Yount, on hand for a charity golf tournament in Mequon, Wis., kicking off two days of festivities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1982 American League championship club.

"I follow them every game I can. I'm watching on the computer or listening on the radio. Every chance I get, I'm 'there.'"
