A search committee has given the University System of Georgia Board of Regents its list of candidates to replace Erroll Davis as university system chancellor.

Committee members interviewed candidates earlier this month and turned over a list of names to the regents within the past three or four days, said regents Chairman Willis Potts, who served on the search committee.

Besides Potts, the committee included seven other regents, University of Georgia President Michael Adams, several other college administrators, faculty members and a student.

The regents did not release how many names the search committee turned over to the full board nor release the names of candidates.

The full board will interview three candidates in mid-April, following the regents' next scheduled meeting, and then announce a list of up to three finalists, Potts said.

Under Georgia law, the board must wait 14 days after making the finalist list public before voting on who to hire as the next chancellor.

Although the regents could name up to three finalists, they may name only one - a practice they have followed in some recent presidential searches.

Ricardo Azziz was the only finalist named last year after the board interviewed candidates to become president of the Medical College of Georgia, now renamed the Georgia Health Sciences University.

Davis, a former energy company executive, announced in October he would step down June 30 after five years as top administrator of Georgia's 35 public colleges and universities, which enrolled about 311,000 students last fall.

Davis said the timing was good for him to step down so that a new chancellor could establish a lasting relationship with new Gov. Nathan Deal.
