WHAT YOU DID HERE: Was medical writer and general assignment reporter.

WHAT YOU DO NOW: I am now associate editor and columnist on the editorial board of the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer .

FAVORITE CHRONICLE REMEMBRANCE: The day I finagled to use the company's helicopter for a story. I did a story on prison medical care and rode to Reidsville, the state's maximum security prison, with doctors from MCG. But I convinced editors I'd have to use the newspaper's helicopter to get back in time to write the story.

It worked.

Even the docs were impressed, a couple of whom hitched a ride back to Augusta on the helicopter with me. Oh, the other interesting thing was the story.

The doctors used inmates to help provide care. They trained them to do some amazing work, but it was disconcerting to be standing next to murderers and other major criminals while they dispensed care.
