The Augusta Chronicle began its 225th year with a reorganization of the news operation.
Much of the change centered on the goal of providing a steadier and fuller diet of local news in print and online.
In January, augustachronicle.com moved onto a new software platform and into more digital devices. One goal was for the newspaper to be more interactive through Twitter and Facebook.
Along with the transformation to a Drupal-based engine, the Web site was redesigned.
The changes allowed more people in the newsroom to be involved in production and management of the site content.
Chronicle staff members are working together on social media to extend the newspaper's ability to interact and share the news on mobile devices and more.
Features of the new site include:
- Registered users can start a profile page, choose to follow favorite users, start a blog and post photos.
- More of the news sections change throughout the day.
- Increased production and presentation of news photos and photo galleries.
- Topic pages offer news coverage collections and links.
- More staff blogs on topics of interest.
- Reporter archive pages allow users to follow stories from an individual writer.
- Mobile news. Smartphone-friendly format of the news is automated. No "app" required. (A few phones might require using the default "m.augustachronicle.com" address to view.)
- More assertive moderation of story comments.
"A newspaper that has been around for 225 years has weathered many tough days and reinvented itself several times," Chronicle Executive Editor Alan English said in a Jan. 24 column. "Our team is inspired to invigorate our daily report to serve the community ... as the single-best source of local news and information for another 225 years."
