Boxes of gifts


Local volunteers will be collecting gift-filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child through Monday.

The gifts will be sorted and sent to needy children around the world. Shoe boxes should be filled with school supplies, toys, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toiletries, candy and a letter of encouragement. Step-by-step shoe box packing instructions are available at

Ordering flowers

Aiken Teen Pregnancy Prevention will take orders through Monday for poinsettias in a variety of colors and sizes, as well as double-sided evergreen wreaths.

All proceeds will be used to support Aiken Teen Pregnancy Prevention's efforts to reduce teen pregnancies in Aiken County.

Space program

To the Moon and Beyond will be featured at 7 and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Dupont Planetarium at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center at the University of South Carolina Aiken, 471 University Parkway, Aiken.

Tickets are $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for ages 62 and older and $2.50 for students through high school.

Quilts on display

A quilt show will be on display through Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Aiken County Historical Museum, 433 Newberry St. S.W., Aiken.

Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Museum admission is free.

Good yarn-spinner

The Town and Country Club will meet Thursday, Dec. 4, at Houndslake Country Club, 901 Houndslake Drive, Aiken. A social will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting at 10 a.m.

The speaker, Joy Bermhein, is known for her storytelling. Lunch will follow the meeting. Reservations are required for lunch.

Festival deadlines

Planning is under way for the 2009 Westobou Festival in Augusta. The primary performance disciplines are dance, music, visual arts and theater, although others will be considered.

Applicants seeking Westobou Festival Endorsement and Porter Fleming Foundation funding have until Monday, Dec. 15, to submit their application and supporting materials.

The deadline for applicants seeking Westobou Festival Endorsement only is March 31.
