Petting and pets


The CSRA Humane Society will hold a Pet-A-Fair today at Julian Smith Casino, 2205 Broad St., Augusta. Doors open at noon and pet contests start at 2 p.m.

The event will feature a silent auction, contests, raffles, a bake sale, vendors, souvenirs and microchipping.

Admission is free. All proceeds benefit the CSRA Humane Society's homeless pets.

Playhouse comedy

The family comedy Over the River and Through the Woods will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Aiken Community Playhouse, Washington Center for the Performing Arts, 126 Newberry St., Aiken.

Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 ages 60 and older, $12 students and $6 ages 11 and under.

Apple festival

An Apple Fest will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church, corner of Richland Avenue and Newberry Street, Aiken.

The festival will feature children's activities, crafts, a consignment shop, a bake shop, a Christmas shop and the Apple Seed CafÃ.

Quilts on display

A Quilt Show will be on display Thursday, Nov. 6, through Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Aiken County Historical Museum, 433 Newberry St. S.W., Aiken.

Applications for the show are available at the museum. Quilts must be brought no later than Monday. All quilts must have a sleeve for hanging.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Museum admission is free.

Historic oratory

The Town and Country Club will meet Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Etherredge Center at the University of South Carolina Aiken, 471 University Parkway, Aiken. A social will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting will start at 10 a.m.

The speaker is Bob Rollins, who is known for his Mark Twain and Will Rogers impersonations. He will be performing famous speeches of past presidents.

Honoring youths

The Augusta Chronicle is accepting nominations for Community Counts Youth of the Month.

This award recognizes students of good academic standing who possess special talents in the arts, athletics or other areas. Youths who volunteer in their school, church or community also are worthy of nomination.

The child selected as Youth of the Month will be highlighted in an article in The Augusta Chronicle . A banquet will be held next summer to honor all 12 recipients of the award and their family members.
