Ministry feeds body and spirit

AIKEN --- It's been a year since the Aiken Church of Christ began participating in the Angel Food Ministries, and since then the church has sold about 600 boxes of food to area families.

"We just saw it as an excellent outreach program," church member Dave Hill said of the decision to participate in the food ministry. "We saw it as a way to not only help people but to introduce people to our congregation."

Each box costs $30 and contains enough food to feed a family of four for a week. The boxes contain name-brand food that is not out of date; if purchased at a grocery store they would cost about $75 each, Mr. Hill said.

"They can use EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards, checks or cash," he said. In the year the church has been involved with the program "we've never had a check returned."

Angel Food Ministries, a nonprofit organization based in Monroe, Ga., orders and distributes food in bulk to host sites, such as the Aiken Church of Christ, which then distribute food boxes per individual orders.

Mr. Hill said there are no income restrictions and no limit on the number of boxes an individual can order.

And the food boxes are not just for families.

"We have some who are single, like some of our elderly, who buy one a month," Mr. Hill said. "There's so much food in them, they say it's enough for them for the whole month."

The menu varies monthly, but there's always meat, canned goods, dry goods, fruit and dairy products.

The boxes that will be ready for pickup at the church on Aug. 23 will contain 1.5 pounds of rib-eye steaks, 5 pounds of chicken-leg quarters, 28 ounces of chicken nuggets, 28 ounces of Salisbury steak entrees, 32 ounces of breaded chicken breast filets, 16 ounces of smoked sausage, 16 ounces of frozen vegetables, 16 ounces of frozen carrots, 16 ounces of frozen spinach, 10-count frozen waffles, 16 ounces of bean soup mix, 1 pound of rice, 9 ounces of instant potatoes, 15 ounces of sliced peaches, a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs and a dessert item.
