How they stack up

A Peach Belt Conference coach sizes up today's matchup between Augusta State and Clayton State:

Augusta State's Steve Smith (5.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.8 apg) vs. Clayton State's Tracy Williams (9.8 ppg, 4.8 apg, 3.9 rpg)

ANALYSIS: They both do a good job of running their team. Tracy is very good at breaking you down one-on-one. He's capable of creating shots for himself as well as creating shots for his teammates. Smith does a really good job of creating shots for his teammates:

EDGE: Clayton State

Augusta State's Demetrius Howard (8.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 55 3-pointers) vs. Clayton State's Bernard Fields (9.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 39 steals)

ANALYSIS: Demetrius Howard is a consistent shooter. He plays his role well. They're both equally important to their teams. I think Bernard's playing real well right now.

Augusta State's Ben Madgen (15.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 57 3-pointers) vs. Clayton State's Michael Sloan (13.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 58 3-pointers)

ANALYSIS: Sloan is playing very well right now. He's gotten confident as the season's gone on. He can put it on the floor and he's got a nice pull-up shot. At this point, he's shooting the ball very consistent whereas Madgen is not.

EDGE: Clayton State

Augusta State's Tyrekus "A.J." Bowman (19.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 45 steals) vs. Clayton State's Brian Kelly (8.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 18 blocks)

ANALYSIS: Bowman's a very good player. He's tremendous on the offensive end. He's good on the defensive end. He can step out and shoot. He can post you up. He's a very good player.

EDGE: Augusta State

Augusta State's Garret Siler (14.7 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 80 blocks) vs. Clayton State's Armel Traore Dit Nignan (4.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 18 blocks)

ANALYSIS: (Siler is) too big. And it's hard to stop him. I think he'll end up with five fouls, but I still think the time he's in the game is going to be a tremendous advantage for Augusta State. I just don't see how you can match up with him.

EDGE: Augusta State

ANALYSIS: Will Lewis comes in and I think he's a big asset for Clayton State off the bench. I also think (Augusta State guard Daniel) Dixon is a good asset. (Clayton State's) Jerome Boyd and (Augusta State's) Luke Tambon equal out. They give you some good defense and maybe a bucket here or there. I'd go with Clayton State, just because Dixon is not playing that great. He's a good player, but he's not playing great. And Will Lewis is playing real well right now.

EDGE: Clayton State

Augusta has to pound the ball inside. They've got to get the ball to Siler and Bowman. As long as those two guys are on the floor, Augusta's going to have an advantage.

Clayton State has to take Bowman and Siler and make sure they're not effective. You have to do those things inside to make sure they don't have big games. I think that's what Clayton State did in the Peach Belt Tournament. Bowman didn't have a big game. Siler didn't have a big game. (The Lakers) attacked them and got them in foul trouble. You have to get those two in foul trouble.

It's tough to tell. (Augusta State) lost to Clayton State in the Peach Belt Tournament, and I think that lit a fire up under them. But I also think Clayton State's playing real well right now. You're going to see a great game. It just shows how strong the Peach Belt is.
