Midland Valley gospel group signs recording deal

Obtaining a record deal is often a far-off dream for any shower singer, but two Midland Valley High School students and their family band were recently signed by a Christian music label.

Laurna and Clint Jackson, 14 and 17, perform with their mother, Dawn Jackson, and Pure Heart. Signed to Lamon Records this summer, the gospel group has had a busier performance schedule this year.

"Sometimes it gets tiring, but Mom does most of the booking so we don't miss too much school," Laurna said.

Going into high school, not many of her friends know about the band's record deal, but those around Laurna recognize her talent.

"My friends think it's cool," she said. "Last year when I was in chorus at Leavelle (McCampbell Middle School), people would come up to me and talk about my voice. But I really don't think I'm an awesome singer that could go solo."

Laurna began singing with the band this year, but Mrs. Jackson has had the children harmonizing since childhood. Clint, who plays several instruments, has performed with Pure Heart for years.

Pure Heart's record deal hasn't changed the band dynamic or its mission for ministry, Mrs. Jackson said.

"We still have the same sound and there are no new members, so we're still doing everything the same way," she said. "Basically, we have someone that's helping us get national exposure."

Band members have regular jobs during the week, but their weekends are spent on the road performing in churches and conventions.

"We're just trying to stay true to ourselves," Mrs. Jackson said.

The band's next performance will be at noon Saturday at the Haven of Rest bookstore on Pine Log Road in Aiken. Other performance dates can be found at www.pureheartweb.com.
